Natural Treatments Can Help Relieve the Pain of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the result of the breakdown and ultimate loss of the cartilage in one or more of the joints resulting in symptoms of pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis in the hip and knee is the most common. Cartilage is a protein based substance used as a cushion between the bones. While this disease is considered degenerative, this is primarily because the cartilage wears with age and use. There are treatments which can help reduce the loss of cartilage or reduce the symptoms of pain and inflammation.

Osteoarthritis is due mostly to aging. As we age, the water in the cartilage increases but the protein dissipates. Eventually, the cartilage begins flaking and forms tiny crevasses where the bone rubs against it. In more severe cases, there can be a complete loss of the cartilage cushion. Continued use of the worn joints will irritate and inflame it, with symptoms of joint pain and swelling. The irritation can stimulate bone spurs call osteophytes. Complete loss of the cartilage cushion causes friction between the bones, leading to joint immobility. Hip and knee replacement surgery is the only option when the condition gets to this point.

There are a variety of natural remedies available to treat the symptoms and many of these may even slow the progress of the disease. Fresh pineapple juice is high in citric acid and helps reduce the swelling and inflammation. Lime juice has also proven effective in dissolving the uric acid sometimes associated with Osteoarthritis. Tea made with the herb alfalfa, particularly from its seeds, has shown some beneficial results in relief of pain. Bananas are a great source of vitamin B6 which promotes the protein retention of cartilage. Garlic has an anti-inflammatory property and is therefore another effective natural treatment. In terms of supplements, Glucosamine & Chondroitin are two of the most popular for relief of pain and inflammation. MSM is a natural sulphur compound which acts like an anti-inflammatory. Turmeric and Ginger Extract also have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Used as an herbal treatment, these can often be more effective than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Manganese has a vital antioxidant nutrient which helps enzymes and may slow the aging process. Niacinamide is Vitamin B3 and slows the progress of arthritis by maintaining the integrity of cells tissues.

There are more options than just over the counter mediations. Speak to your doctor about what alternative methods of treatment are available for relief of the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
